Mind, Body, Spirit

Mind, Body, Spirit

Eating disorders don't discriminate. They don't care what you look like, where you live, how old you are, what race you are or what gender you are. Eating disorders can happen to anyone. Boys have eating disorders. Little kids have eating disorders. Old people have eating disorders. People with children have eating disorders. Gay people have eating disorders. Approximately 70 million people suffer from eating disorders. In the US more people die from anorexia than from Hiv/Aids. 1 in 5 women suffer from eating disorders worldwide. About 1% of Australian girls are anorexic, and 3% are bulimic. And those are just the people who will admit it. Approximately 25% of people with eating disorders are male, it does happen. Boys and girls with eating disorders are more common than you would think. It is very appalling that this issue isn't regarded with the importance it deserves. We can't afford to ignore this forever.

We created this website not only to help people with eating disorders or those considering starting this destructive path, but also to raise awareness and educate people about this disease and its horrible consequences. There are  millions of beautiful people who are suffering because of this. We dream of a world where boys and girls with mental disorders can help each other and live in harmony instead of hiding their problems and slowly dying. We want to focus on the beauty of recovery and the wonder of life, rather than the pain of eating disorders.

We want to let the world know that this affects a lot more people than we think. We want to raise awareness and work together to stop this disease from spreading. There is no cure for eating disorders, there is no pill you can swallow to get better, yes it's possible to recover but imagine how much better the world would be if we could talk about this with each other and not have to hide. Imagine how much better this world would be if we could just get over our fear of secrets and this taboo.  People don't want to think about or talk about eating disorders. Because it is a very controversial subject. Most people either make jokes, ignore it or feel sorry but what can you do? But this is killing our children. This is ruining our families. This could easily destroy humanity. This is a pandemic. We can't just sit back and do nothing when we can save millions of lives because we don't want to talk about it. In this website we want to talk about this. We want this to be a place where you don't have to be afraid.

I hope you can find some form of help and inspiration here no matter who you are. This site isn't just about talking about eating disorders and their consequences, we want to inspire you and show you how amazing life can be. We want you to start thinking positively again, and we will provide some resources to get some help. The rest is up to you. Just remember that if we continue to keep deadly secrets and continue this destructive path we will achieve nothing but more hate and pain. Help us to create a world where at least one less person has to suffer this.

Do you really want live like this for the rest of your life?

 What are eating disorders?

Well there are many different types. You've probably heard of the most common; anorexia (not eating) and bulimia (getting rid of food). But there are many many many other types of eating disorders, some haven't even been named yet (EDNOS- eating disorder not yet specified), but they DO exist. So even if you think "yeah I have problems with food and my body, but I don't have an eating disorder," well maybe you do. Here are some very common, very real, but almost unheard of eating disorders:

Body Dysmorphic Disorder- is about how you perceive your appearance. It is where a person is concerned with their overall appearance and not just their weight. Most people have something they don't like about themselves, but BDD is the extreme. People who suffer from BDD are often enormously critical of themselves, and have chronic low-self esteem.

Binge Eating - Characterised by periods of uncontrolled, impulsive, or continuous eating beyond the point of feeling comfortably full.

Anorexia Athletica- When a person no longer enjoys exercise, but feels obliged to do so.

Over Exercise- When a person is scheduling life around exercise just like people with eating disorders schedule their lives around eating or not eating

Compulsive Over Eating- The excessive consumption of food (bingeing), often thousands of calories at at time.

Night Eaing- Characterised by a lack of appetite in the morning and overeating at night with insomnia

Orthorexia- A fixation on eating proper food

EDNOS- Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified- A person struggling with eating disorder thoughts, feelings or behaviours, but does not have all the symptoms of anorexia or bulimia.

Maybe you've heard of binge eating or over exercise but if you ask a random person on the street what Orthorexia is, chances are they won't know what you are talking about. There are reasons these diseases aren't as well known as anorexia and bulimia. Mainly because the media isn't as obsessed with them, so we don't hear about them as much. But also because they aren't widely taught in schools, so people aren't as educated to their consequences, or even their existence. But like all eating disorders, the diseases listed can drive you to insanity and kill you if you give them the chance. Just remember that no matter what people say, eating disorders are not a choice. They are a disease and this is not your fault. But you hold in your heart the key to stopping this, and you just have to learn to gain the strength to let go. Don't ever give up the fight, even when the world seems darkest.

I think that there are 3 main reasons for someone not getting help for an eating disorder.

1. They are too scared or ashamed to tell anyone

2. They don't want it to go away

3. They don't think they have a problem

Be aware and give a hand

Now that you're more educated on the different eating disorders you can look around for any signs of these disorders on the people around you. I know that from my experience I wanted someone to figure me out and help me. No matter how much I wanted to keep going and keep my addiction, deep inside I wanted out of this hell.

If you're the one with the eating disorder, please don't hesitate and reach for the hands around you. You know you want out of this hell and be happy for once. You want to remember how it feels to laugh and enjoy a day where all you feel is security and love from everyone and everything. Reach for your hand, help, freedom, happiness, life.
